Retail revenue from the Christmas trading period in Germany 2005-2024
Customers in Germany spent around 121.4 billion euros during the Christmas trading period of 2024, based on a forecast. This was an increase compared to the year before. Sales revenue has increased annually during the specified time period, despite the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic throughout 2020 and 2021.
Christmas online retail
Christmas and the preceding months, especially November and December, are some of the busiest times for German retailers, as well as being extremely profitable. Online retail sales from Christmas sales have only grown in the last decade. However, in 2023, due to several shocks to the economy that impacted the purchasing power, most retailers expected the revenues from online sales during the Christmas season to be lower or even much lower than in the previous year.
Buying Christmas gifts
In 2023, Germans spent around 507 euros per person on Christmas presents. Current inflation levels may have influenced the slight decrease in spending compared to the year before. When looking at spending on Christmas gifts by shopping location, shopping online was the most popular option.
